Pre Payments

You may make payments on your property tax account year around. We will place your payments in escrow and hold it for you. Remember each year to call our office to pay your taxes out of escrow.

Tax Deferral

Seniors and disabled persons are eligible to defer their property taxes which means they may be paid (once deferral approved) and if not, 8% interest per year is added to the unpaid balance.

To obtain a deferral an individual must file with the Chief Appraiser. The deferral begins with the tax year following the first tax year the individual applied for the deferral. (Example: Tax payer applied for the deferral January 2016, the property first qualifies for the current tax year which is 2015).

You should be aware that a tax deferral only postpones payments, it does not cancel them. Once you no longer own your home, all the taxes, pre-deferral penalties and interest, together with the 8% deferral interest become due after 180 days. If the taxes remain unpaid, regular penalties and interest accrue and the taxing units may proceed with a lawsuit to collect delinquent taxes through a tax sale.

Late Payment Penalty

A tax lien is automatically placed on property on January 1st of each year to insure that taxes are paid. Tax rates are usually set in September and tax bills are mailed out in October. Taxes are due by January 31st without penalty and interest. If you do not make your full tax payment by January 31st, you will be charged penalty and interest starting February 1st on the unpaid balance.
